The Bastille was sacked on this day in 1789 at the height of the French Revolution. The Marquis de Sade, an inmate there (for obscenity) at the time, feared his incomplete 120 Days of Sodom lost in the chaos. It was found, however, and not published until 1904.
Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman, initially promoted as a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird but now more widely considered an early draft of that work, was published decades after it was written on this day in 2015
